How to be a Successful Entrepreneur in High School

Entrepreneur Knowledge Leadership and Strategy October 13, 2016

For future generations to have a Steve Jobs or Elon Musk of their own, entrepreneurship needs to be talked about. And when almost three out of four high school students are interested in starting a business someday, the time to talk is now.

Join us as we walk through the steps of becoming an entrepreneur in high school and how The Bridge School lets students continue their education while still chasing their dreams.

Find Something You Love

Ask any business owner and they’ll tell you being an entrepreneur requires dedication and hard work. Thankfully, it’s easier to work hard when you’re doing something you’re passionate about.

Brainstorm things you enjoy doing, are good at and can be monetized. This will be your business, so take your time and be sure to ask others for input.

Possible ideas include:

  • Animal care
  • App development
  • Social marketing

Ignore The Haters

Bill Gates started Microsoft at 20, Steve Jobs co-founded Apple at 21, and Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook at 19. Age is just a number. If you have a good idea and put some effort into it, you easily be an entrepreneur in high school.

Invest Time Before Investing Money

Starting a company is exciting, but before you pay someone to create a website, stock up on inventory or make serious financial decisions, hit the brakes. You have a lot of research to do first.

Questions To Ask

  • Who is your target customer?
  • What is the competition like?
  • Do you have the means to make it happen?

Create a Business Plan

Once your idea has been vetted, you’ve conducted your research and it’s still viable, it’s time to create a business plan.

A business plan is a road map to your business’s future and includes:

  • Company and Industry Analysis
  • Competitive and Customer Analysis
  • Marketing and Operations Plan
  • Financial Plan
  • Executive Summary
