The Houston Ballet has a reputation for a high standard of excellence that spans across their leadership team, their faculty, their performances, as well as their students. Because they serve between 50-60 middle and high school age students each year, they also recognize the importance of providing an excellent academic program.

Shelly Power, who is the Director of the Houston Ballet Academy, led a yearlong effort with her team with the board involvement to revamp the Academy’s academic programs.

While the Academic Advisors have experience with all 7 of the curriculum providers, the students ended up feeling isolated from one another because there was no consistency between what each of them was experiencing. This made it difficult for them to study together and talk about things going on in their course work.

“Our academic committee met each month over the course of a year to review different solutions. Our students are training full time, so they need a school with a lot of flexibility. But since we demand a high standard of excellence in all that we do, we also needed a school that provides college-readiness in the event one of our students decided they wanted to attend college. We knew we wanted to start moving in the direction of a standardized process and overall academic curriculum,” says Ms. Power.

“The Bridge School is really the perfect solution for the Houston Ballet students. Not only are they a local Houston school, they are also very accommodating to our student’s unique needs. We believe they are truly interested in kid’s success,” finishes Power.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to serve students from the Houston Ballet Academy. The Bridge School is uniquely positioned to offer a flexible schedule with over 200 accredited courses with full graduation plans and a focus on college readiness. We are committed to being as flexible and accommodating as possible for our students, while adhering to rigorous academic standards,” says Dr. Leonard Brown, Head of School at The Bridge School.

“Through our experience with other partnerships, we also realize the value an onsite academic advisor can deliver. The fact that many of the Academy kids are living away from home, they need additional guidance and support. The Academy has a very experienced person (Nate Nakadate) who is so tuned in to the fundamentals that their students need. That is just critical to the overall success of the partnership,” says Dr. Brown.

The Bridge School is located in Houston, Texas and is accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement  (SACS CASI) and approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) through the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission (TEPSAC): School # 101-232-001.
