The Bridge School Presents at the 2013 iNACOL Blended and Online Learning Symposium

The theme of the 2013 iNACOL Symposium in Orlando was about transforming education to student-centric learning. Our Founder, Dr. Spyros Catechis, and Hugh Conway, General Manager, participated in a panel that focused on a recent graduate of The Bridge School named Peter Scharf.

Adolescent Crisis Treatment Through Juvenile Justice and Addiction Recovery Blended Learning Programs

Peter was on the Student Panel at the 2012 iNACOL Symposium and spoke about his addiction and recovery, as well as the role school has played in his life. Like many Bridge School students, his online school became a significant part of his recovery therapy. Blended learning programs for students in crisis can be very effective. Program managers for several different blended learning programs for students in crisis will discuss the specific attributes of online education that facilitate student progress.

Session Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand that students identified as at-risk are often experiencing chronic or acute crises. Substance abuse can be a chronic or acute crisis.
  2. Learn that substance abuse in adolescents can be treated as an illegal behavior or as an addiction, and students abusing drugs may find themselves in a wide variety of “treatment programs.
  3. Understand that treatment programs that employ blended learning can be successful in helping students learn to make positive choices that give them more positive options for their future.


What’s All the Hype with Blending Learning? What Model(s) Really Work and in Which Educational Setting.

In another session, Dr. Statha Cherry, Director of Student Services, and Dr. Catechis spoke about blended learning models that really work.

The area of Blended Learning has taken on various models such as:

  • Rotation
  • Flex
  • Online Labs
  • Limited Face-to-Face

But, there is often little mention as to which models work best in a given educational setting and the types of students to be served. These table top discussions will allow educators across various educational settings to explore from their own point of view which blended learning formats work best.

Session Learning Outcomes:

  1. Be able to identify the four prevalent blended learning models and qualitatively describe them.
  2. Understand the sub-groups that together span the gamut of online learners and discuss why blended learning has a better chance of reaching these diverse students.
  3. Actively discuss and evaluate the models in relation to optimizing performance and diminishing limitations.
